R.E.M.’s reissue campaign celebrating the 25th anniversaries of the its albums continues with the expanded reissue of Up, the band’s first post-Bill Berry album, which will be expanded to include a previously unreleased set performed for the trio’s appearance on the TV show “Party of Five.”
Craft Recordings will release the 25th anniversary edition of 1999’s Up on Nov. 10 on a variety of formats, including — pre-order now — a deluxe 2CD/1 Blu-ray set, a 2CD set and a 180-gram double-vinyl pressing. A limited-edition marble-green 2LP set can also be pre-ordered directly from the band.
All versions include a newly remastered version of the album by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering.
The deluxe 2CD/1 Blu-ray set includes a second CD with R.E.M.’s 11-song performance on the “Party of Five” set in 1999, plus a Blu-ray featuring the album in hi-resolution and 5.1 surround sound, as well as videos for the singles “Daysleeper,” “Lotus” and “At My Most Beautiful,” and a six-song set recorded in a London studio. It’s packaged in a 32-page hardcover book that includes new liner notes by Josh Modell.
The 2CD and digital editions will include the full album and the “Party of Five” live set, while the vinyl editions will only include the remastered version of the original album.
Below, you can hear the band’s performance of “Daysleeper” from the “Party of Five” performance.
Modell writes of the live set:
“There are dozens of great R.E.M. live sets out there, but nothing quite like this up-close oddity. Loose and happy, the band runs through a good chunk of Up in front of a small crowd…Stipe is chatty, telling stories about accidentally ripping off Billy Corgan (and telling Corgan about it), playing with the Human League on a funny stage at that very venue, and more.”
