The Church next month will issue an expanded version of the band’s 26th studio album The Hypnogogue — originally released back in February — as the Australian rock legends return to the U.S. this fall for 25 more concerts in support of that record.
And they’re offering fans the first taste of the bonus material on that upcoming reissue via new single “Realm of Minor Angels,” which you can stream below.
Of the new song, bandleader Steve Kilbey says:
“‘Realm of Minor Angels’ is without doubt one of my favorite singles The Church has ever released. From the moment (guitarist) Jeffrey Cain started playing the opening riff, I was hooked. The singing and lyrics are my own subtle homage to the torch songs of the ‘60s and check out Ian Haug’s mandolin lines and Ashley Naylor’s slide work.”
The expanded version of The Hypnogogue is due out Sept. 22 on the Communicating Vessels label, but the band has not detailed the tracklist or how many additional songs it will feature.
That release comes as The Church returns to the U.S. for a second round of shows in support of the new album. The band, which played 20 dates in the U.S. in March and April, opens the previously announced second leg Sept. 28 in Seattle and continues through a pair of concerts in Evanston, Illinois, on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

The new album is The Church’s first since the 2020 departure of founding guitarist Peter Koppes, leaving singer-bassist Steve Kilbey as the only original member of the band. He’s joined by longtime Church drummer Tim Powles, guitarists Ian Haug and Ashley Naylor, and multi-instrumentalist Jeffrey Cain.
