Greg Dulli’s Twilight Singers unveil 13-piece vinyl box set with rare, unreleased material

Greg Dulli

Greg Dulli’s post-Afghan Whigs project The Twilight Singers — mothballed since the Whigs’ resurrection in 2011 — will release a 13-piece vinyl box set this October, featuring newly remastered versions of all of the band’s albums and a bonus disc of rare and unreleased material.

Titled Black Out the Windows/Ladies and Gentlemen, The Twilight Singers, the limited-edition set will be released by One Little Independent Records and features six double LPs and an EP all pressed on 180-gram, clear vinyl with pictorial etchings on each of the double albums’ D-sides.

The set is available for pre-order directly from One Little Independent Records in the U.K. for £400, or about $500. The label says all order placed by the end of the day on July 15 will “receive a signed letter from Greg Dulli.”

The collection includes remastered versions of each of The Twilight Singers’ five albums — 2000’s Twilight As Played By The Twilight Singers, 2003’s Blackberry Belle, 2004’s She Loves You, 2006’s Powder Burns and 2011’s Dynamite Steps — plus the 2006 A Stitch In Time EP and the new bonus album Etcetera.

The Etcetera compilation includes 11 rare and previously unreleased tracks, including covers of Leonard Cohen’s “Paper Thin Hotel” and Prince’s “When Doves Cry,” as well as “Black Love” — which is presumably the solo piano version of what eventually became “Love” on the first Twilight Singers album, a song that played over the end credits in the film “Monument Avenue.”

The box set, curated by Dulli, includes embossed white sleeves for each album with “reimagined” artwork, as well as a 56-page book that includes photos and essays from the late Mark Lanegan, Duff McKagan of Guns ‘N Roses, Steve Kilbey of The Church and more.

And in an email to fans, The Twilight Singers described the box set as “a very unique limited-edition specialty piece,” and added, “There are no plans to do a separate U.S. release, individual LPs, a CD version, or a digital release of the bonus audio material at this time.”

Of his work with the shifting lineup of The Twilight Singers, Dulli says: “There was a freedom I found in making this music that brought me back to my teenage days. Untethered from preconception or expectations, I could just fly around and create mini groups that stood alone under the Twilight umbrella.”

No word yet, though, whether this box set will be the final statement on The Twilight Singers. In an interview with The Denver Post last year, Dulli said he was open to one last tour with the band:

“I would consider doing another last hurrah with those boys. I remain a devout Twilight Singers fan. Anything to get people back listening to that stuff, I’m all for it. … I don’t know about making new music under that name again, but I learned about 10 years ago to never say never, so there you go.”
