Craft Recordings this summer will reissue two of R.E.M.’s out-of-print latter-era albums — 2004’s Around the Sun and the band’s 2011 swan song Collapse Into Now — on heavyweight audiophile vinyl in both black and special color-variant pressings.
The new pressings of the two albums were cut by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Memphis Records Pressing, and will be released July 14. The black-vinyl pressings are available for pre-order at retailers including Amazon.com, while the limited-edition color variants — opaque white for the 2LP Around the Sun and milky clear for Collapse Into Now — are available exclusively at remhq.com.
Around the Sun was R.E.M.’s third post-Bill Berry album and 13th overall. It included the songs “Leaving New York,” “Aftermath,” “Electron Blue” and “Wanderlust,” plus “The Outsiders,” featuring Q-Tip. Fifteenth and final album Collapse Into Now included the singles “Überlin,” “Oh My Heart” and “It Happened Today.”
Additionally, R.E.M. is expected to continue its series of expanded 25th anniversary reissues of the band’s albums with some kind of box-set edition of 1998’s Up later this year. The group’s Instagram account recently shared a photo of what was billed as an “Up 25 planning meeting.”
