Bob Mould will collect the entirety of his post-Hüsker Dü work — both solo and with Sugar — in a mammoth 24-disc CD box set called Distortion: 1989-2019 that will include 18 studio albums, four live albums and a new two-disc collection of rarities and collaborations.
He’ll also simultaneously release Distortion: 1989-1995, the first in a series of four vinyl box sets covering that same 30-year period. That collection will include eight LPs, from Workbook through Sugar’s File Under: Easy Listening, and also will include the Sugar compilation Besides and a new rarities set.
Additional vinyl box sets are due out in 2021.
Both the CD box set Distortion: 1989-2019 and the vinyl collection Distortion: 1989-1995 will be released Oct. 2 by Demon Music Group, and can both be pre-ordered now (CD box set | vinyl box set).
“It’s called Distortion because it describes the music and it fits the world we live in,” Mould says in press materials announcing the new box sets. “In this new age, everybody shares their life in real time. But I’m not done yet. If I didn’t have a constantly active career, this anthology might feel like the proverbial dirt landing on top of my coffin — though somehow I seem to be able to crawl my way out of the dirt every time!”
The 24-disc CD box set includes 295 tracks remastered by Jeff Lipton and Maria Rice, collecting all of Mould’s solo albums from 1989’s Workbook through 2019’s Sunshine Rock, everything Sugar released, out-of-print electronic albums LoudBomb and Blowoff, and four live albums.
The new two-disc Distortion Plus: 1989-2019 compilation of rarities includes Mould’s 2011 collaboration with Foo Fighters (“Dear Rosemary”), his 1991 collaboration with Golden Palominos (“Dying From the Inside Out”) and a previously unreleased demo of “Dog on Fire,” the Mould-penned theme to “The Daily Show.”
The albums each feature new artwork by illustrator Simon Marchner, and there’s a 72-page booklet with liner notes by UK music critic Keith Cameron and testimonials by Richard Thompson, Shirley Manson and Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino, plus lyrics and other memorabilia.
Mould also is slated to release a brand-new studio album, Blue Hearts, on Sept. 25.

He looks so disapproving in that cover shot. I’m sorry for whatever I did that disappointed him so greatly.
