Depeche Mode next month will release a massive, 18-disc CD box set simply called MODE that will collect all 14 of the band’s studio albums and include four more discs of B-sides, remixes and rarities, a set billed as “a comprehensive collection of the band’s work to date.”
The limited-edition, number box set is due out Nov. 22 and will present Depeche Mode’s original studio albums in black card sleeves with “re-interpreted, all-black artwork.” It’ll also include a 228-page book collecting all of the band’s lyrics. It can be pre-ordered directly from Rhino Records at $179.98.
The four discs of bonus material largely collect what already has been released on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees’ singles box set series, though there are at least three tracks on MODE that have never appeared on CD before: “Sometimes I Wish I Was Dead” (Flexi-Pop Version), “Dressed In Black” (Record Mirror Version) and “Heroes” (Highline Session Version).
Here’s the product description from the band’s website:
MODE is a comprehensive collection of the band’s work to date — comprised of all 14 studio albums plus additional non-album material — from 2017’s Spirit back to DM’s debut album Speak & Spell. In line with DM’s signature aesthetic, the numbered, limited-edition set is housed in an elegant and minimalist black cube, with each disc similarly enclosed in a black, heavyweight card wallet. The albums’ original covers have been re-interpreted in uniform black-on-black designs exclusive to this box set, and four additional bonus discs provide a chronological collection of non-album singles, b-sides and bonus tracks. Accompanying the audio content is a 228 page, gilt-edged book containing all of Depeche Mode’s lyrics, compiled together for the first time, highlighting their collective visceral power and impact.

What a pointless release…
I would’ve preferred a 4 cd 12″ singles collection, covering 1981-1989.
This just a release of all the b-sides nothing really to get excited for any long time fan that collects all the singles. Some new remixes or demo or unreleased track during each CD would have been cool.
Not interested in getting this one, although a few tracks are tempting.
Would like the three ‘new to CD’ tracks on CD but not for $179.
A b-sides box set like The Cure’s would have been better. All mixes of b-sides etc.
I admit my interest in new material waned around the time Exciter came out, so I wouldn’t be interested in having the last few albums in their entirety. I am a bit confused, as some of the songs on the rarities/b-sides discs appear on my regular album versions (But Not Tonight from Black Celebration is a good example, Dreaming of Me from Speak & Spell is another). Is it because I have the American releases that did include them on the CD whereas the original UK releases didn’t include them?
Also, the list of rarities/b-sides is far from complete: I have extended versions of “Now This Is Fun” and “Fools” for example, from when their first box sets were released (1-6)
Yes, exactly. They’re based own the original U.K. versions.
Also, it’s just the standard version of each non-album song – no remixes, etc. “This is the song as we intended.”
Totally agree also not the same since Alan left .
A ridiculous cash-grab and utter waste of anybody’s hard-earned money.
Whatever happened to the Singles Box Sets? I actually liked those and was hoping to see more in the future.
Hero’s is actually the only “unreleased” song.
Dressed in black and I Sometimes Wish I were Dead have been released on previous import CD’s and listings.
Check eBay or other reputable sites for limited edition imports. I’ve found many unreleased songs from Depeche as well as Martin Gore. My biggest prized possession is a limited remix of The Sun and the Rainfall.
The Sun & the Rainfall [never a single or promo item], is on a UK disc or promo and the CLARO INTELECTO Remix is quite a bust, possibly horrible to my ears.
There are several HIGHLINES SESSIONS songs and “HEROES” (spelled this way) and another cover “SO CRUEL” were made and you are correct Heroes is not a cd until this set. The longer fade DRESSED IN BLACK Record Mirror.Version and SOMETIMES WISH I WAS DEAD are vinyl exclusives.
Claro Intelecto has never remixed The Sun and The Rainfall. You were probably thinking of Leave In Silence (he did two mixes of it).
It was LEAVE IN SILENCE,
@Unit, yes. I don’t see any officially commissioned SUN & THE RAINFALL nor on promo and acetate imports; I guessed the correct era and my mistake on the song name.
C’mon mute’ please release something for us dm experts. some of us already have these tracks. I was expecting a lot more from your years of recordings but find it only as a reissue package. it’s a nice collection for any professional amateur.
