New Order will reissue its debut album Movement — originally released in 1981, about 18 months after Ian Curtis’ suicide ended Joy Division — in a “Definitive Edition” boxed set next April, a 4-disc collection that will include the original album on both vinyl and CD as well as a bonus CD filled with previously unreleased demos and a DVD of live appearances.
The band also will reissue four 12-inch singles — “Ceremony (Version 1),” “Ceremony (Version 2),” “Everything’s Gone Green” and “Temptation” — in their original sleeves starting March 8.
The Movement: Definitive Edition boxed set is due out April 5, and can be pre-ordered now via Amazon.co.uk, or directly from the band in bundles that include additional 12-inch singles and a T-shirt.
The first two discs of the boxed set comprise the original Martin Hannett-produced album on both vinyl and CD. The third disc, a CD, includes 18 tracks, most of which are demos, but also a couple rehearsal recordings, an alternate 7-inch mix of “Temptation” and a first mix of “Ceremony.”
And the fourth disc is a DVD stuffed with 35 songs, performed live at venues in New York City, Manchester, London, Minneapolis, Paris and more between 1980 and 1983.

The set will come enclosed in a box with a lift-off lid that also will include a new hardback book.
New Order, which has a lone U.S. appearance scheduled for next month, has not said whether this is the beginning of a catalog-wide reissue campaign, but it’s a good bet that’s what’s happening. Hopefully they’ll roll out more smoothly than New Order’s last reissues.

Wow $170 bucks direct or $140 from Amazon for a disc of demos and a DVD. Really? More like Movement: Cash Grab Edition. No thanks, New Order. This does not even include the additional tracks that were tacked on to the 2008 reissue. Given the track record of a few other recent repackages by artists in a similar vein (Depeche Mode 12″ boxes and Kate Bush Boxes come to mind), I would expect this price to sink like a rock on Amazon.
I hope so. I don’t know if I can resist, and Movement is far from my favorite from them even. OK I do know, I can’t resist. By the time they get to PC&L I will have given in. That DVD, damn! and I have to wonder if that alt Temptation is the one on the Something Wild soundtrack, since that version is nowhere else that I know of…three versions of Hurt and versions of Chosen Time…yeah I’m already caving.
Are they gonna fuck this one up as badly as the previous Deluxe edition(s)?
Hoping they’ll release some rare remixes for future re-releases, like “True Dub”, the full-length “Elegia”, “Shell-Cock”, et al.
Or maybe a Singles Box Set like Depeche Mode
Interested in CD2 and the DVD but frustrating that they include the vinyl LP in the box which doesn’t help with the price which is crazy high. Would like the singles (7″ and 12″) on CD vs vinyl. Will be interesting to see what comes out on subsequent releases in this series.
They should have included the material from the 2008 bonus CD for certain.
Singles are being reissued separately. THAT is a cash grab.
Gotta hear those Cargo Demo’s, especially Cries and Whispers / Mesh … never been released before, right ? Can’t wait !
How much? hahahah
