Last night, The Jesus and Mary Chain played the EDP Vilar de Mouros festival in Portugal, a bill that included The Mission and Primal Scream — presenting an ideal opportunity for the Reid brothers to reunite with their original drummer, Primals frontman Bobby Gillepsie.
Toward the end of their 15-song set, Jim Reid told the crowd, “We’re going to do a few songs from Psychocandy. I’m sure you know who he is, but we’ve asked our drummer from that album, Mr. Bobby G…”
With that, Gillespie emerged from the wings, taking his place at a small, stand-up drum kit — the kind he used to play during his early foray as the Mary Chain’s drummer — and began pounding out the iconic “Be My Baby” drum intro to Psychocandy opener “Just Like Honey.” Gillespie, playing along with JAMC’s touring drummer, stuck around to perform “The Living End” and “Never Understand” as well.

The Jesus and Mary Chain currently are on tour in support of their first new album in 18 years, Damage and Joy. The band has just announced a second U.S. leg in support of the new record, and will return this fall for a dozen concerts in the western reaches of the country.
