Contest: Win a copy of Daniel Ash’s ‘Stripped’ — new album of re-recorded songs

Daniel Ash

Last year, Daniel Ash embarked on a crowdfunded recording project to remake songs from his back catalog in new, stripped-down arrangements. The resulting album, Stripped, features re-recordings of some of his favorite Love and Rockets, Tones on Tail and Bauhaus tracks — and we’ve now got CD copies to give away to four lucky Slicing Up Eyeballs readers.

The 12-track album features new versions of seven Love and Rockets songs, three Tones on Tail songs, and one Bauhaus song, plus a brand-new song. Check out the full tracklist below, and check out the new version of Love and Rockets’ “So Alive” to get a taste of the project.

TO ENTER: In the comments section below, name your favorite Daniel Ash song, whether it’s a solo track, or something from his time with Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, or Tones on Tail — and let us know why you think it’s so great. If you’re using the Slicing Up Eyeballs app, please email your entry to info@slicingupeyeballs.com with the subject line “I absolutely must win that Daniel Ash CD.”

RULES: This contest is open anyone in the world. We’ll take entries until 5 p.m. EST Friday, Feb. 13. After that point, we’ll select four winners and random, who will be notified via their provided e-mail addresses. One entry per person. Good luck, and godspeed.

  1. Vitor Duarte

“Saudade”. Exquisite atmosphere. Brings back memories.

  2. Bela Lugosi’s Dead – masterpiece for all times

  3. My first answer is “Get Out Of Control” off Foolish Thing Desire (great title, by the way), because it was my introduction to his solo work and the guitar sounds amazing.

  4. Brandon Morgan

“So Alive” is still one of my favorite songs. I heard it first in college. I even sing it to my newborn! I suppose he likes it too.

  5. Ana Fernandez

Slice of Life. It’s raw and addictive

  6. Michael in SoCal

Sweet FA – Danny boy sums it all up rather perfectly with this one.

  7. David Vasquez

All in my Mind- Love & Rockets

  8. Tones On Tail’s “Rain” is always a lovely epic piece.

  9. Mike weiner

    “Haunted While The Minutes Drag”

  10. No New Tale To Tell, great chorus, great lyrics

  11. In The Flat Field – favorite guitar part of any Bauhaus song

  12. Stephanie Wallin

Kundalini Express – I just always thought this track was a great showcase of his guitar work, which is so underrated.

  13. Rain very atmospheric and relaxing

  14. Ian Stapleton

    SLICE OF LIFE.

  15. Walk this way (hard to choose just one)

  16. She’s in parties by Bauhaus

  17. Real Life – the sounds on this track are amazing.

  18. Yin and Yang and the Flower Pot Man – Express

My first CD I purchased. I was hooked.

  19. “Go!” ToT. Because it just makes you go. Simple pop perfection.

  20. No New Tell to Tale – I know it’s really commercial sounding but it was my first proper intro to the band. I’d heard about them before this point but seeing the video drew me in and now I’m a huge fan of all their stuff. Earth, Sun, Moon is still my favorite though because I bought the album based on No New Tell to Tale but love every song on that great album. Ah. Great memories.

    • Waiting for the Flood is another great track off that album. The lyrics themselves are lacking compared to other L&R songs, but the vocals and musicianship are are masterful.

  21. Tones On Tail ‘Happiness’ because hope it’s not good!

  22. cris Rodriguez

    SO ALIVE

  23. Candy Darling. Best Song ever. I’ve tattoo of it.

  24. Ritual Radio.

  25. Matthew Grimes

‘Lions’ by Tones on Tail-I’ve always loved songs that are bare and stripped down.

  26. Tones On Tail “You, The Night And The Music”
    (“Burning Skies” 12″- 1983)
For the melancholy, the filmic aspect, like a cryptic litany, obsessive at its best.

  27. I absolutely must win that Daniel Ash CD. No Big Deal is my favorite song because it really epitomizes his development of song writing talent. It is a long way from Earth, Sun, Moon.

  28. “MasterMind” This track is the epitome of an artist who helped define and shape a genre that will always have a timeless sound. If you ever had the privilege to see him perform in any of his many creations you would know what I’m talking about.

  29. “Motorcycle”,
    because Triumph!
Throw a leg over that thing, let’s vroom!

  30. Samantha Speer

No Big Deal. Because it reminds me not to take life or people too seriously. I have been a huge L&R fan since the 80’s and was able to see them live once at SDSU Backdoor years ago.

  31. Love and Rockets – “Here Come The Comedown”

It was a perfect mix of electronics (which they were experimenting with during that time) and their Love and Rockets songwriting. It seems like they had a blast recording it, too. (But I’m probably reading too much into it)

  32. Meghan McConaghy

So Alive because it melts my panties

  33. Telegram Sam

  34. Haunted When The Minutes Drag, it’s just so beautiful!!

  35. “No New Tale To Tell” – from the heart of my teenage years. It’s takes me back to the good old days. “Please call my name”.

  36. “Mirror People”
There’s something about his guitar sound on this particular one that makes me play it a few times in a row every time I listen. His vocals are soothing as always.

  37. “No Big Deal” — The lyrics just oozed coolness and all that distortion. That’s what guitars and bass should aim to sound like.

  38. “Go!” – It’s an ’80s club banger.

  39. Brian Duggan

Crowds – How I ended up hating her and the way she made me feel. I’m always reminded when I hear this.

  40. Brian Martin

At this moment, “Twist” by Tones on Tail. The bassline still gives me chills after 25 years of first hearing it. The surreal lyrics and those seagulls… mysteriously divine and bouncy track.

  41. Slender Fungus.

  42. Call me nuts, but I love “Trip and Glide” on Hot Trip to Heaven.

  43. Slender Fungus. It’s wholly unique & kind of gross with clearing of throat rhythm.

  44. Van Edwards

He’s written so many great songs – I’m going to have to go with “Walk This Way” from the Coming Down album. I love that Latin beat with that very Ash-esque guitar. I was hoping for new Love & Rockets in college when this came out instead – it was an unexpected gem. I used to listen to it while working dorm security.

  45. You, the night and the music…atmospheric perfection

  46. So Alive. It’s the theme song of my high school years. Embedded within me.

  47. She’s in Parties – Daniel’s guitar work is exquisite!

  48. Haunted when the minutes drag

  49. “Go!” Tones on Tail. I was never one to go out dancing to the clubs, but I cannot help myself when I hear that song!

  50. It was between “No Big Deal” and “It Could Be Sunshine” because both have applied to my life, both are fun to dance to, and both are motivators to listen to while I study. However, I can sing “No Big Deal” to every single annoying person out there and walk away satisfied.

  51. Rui Carvalheira

Tones On Tail ‘happiness’ because hope it’s not good!

  52. Steven McElroy

    “All in My Mind”

  53. “The Dog-End Of A Day Gone By” (Love and Rockets)
…favorite song on favorite album of theirs. Powerful guitar and drums on this one.

  54. Too Much Choice – A great Love & Rockets song off Lift that should be as well known as any song in their catalog. Unfortunately due to the label going out of business right when the album came out the album flopped and it is easily one of their best releases.

  55. Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven – punk ballad – love

  56. slice of life. so minimal and raw.
but, then, that’s just because is was one of the first of his i loved. so many after…

  57. “Performance”. First song I ever heard from the goth god!

  58. Material Girl by Madonna

  59. If There’s A Heaven Above. I just never get tired of it.

    • I never get tired of that album. It’s just such a display of talent for all three of them. Their ability to conceptualize and execute so perfectly is nothing short of stunning.

      • You’re both so right. In a lot of ways, they were never better than they were on that record and especially that song. It’s just so great from end to end.

  60. Too Much Choice gives me chills!

  61. American Dream

  62. Rain by Tones on Tail… love the whole atmosphere of it… and love the new direction it took at the time it was released. Plus i love the rain!

  63. Slice of Life-Bauhaus

  64. Too Much Choice always gives me the shivers.

  65. Lions. It was so different than anything else at that time. From that point I looked back at Bauhaus. It also almost got me kicked out of my apt. As I used to listen to it cranked to 10.

  66. Tones on Tail’s “Lions!”

  67. Michael Overbey

ToT GO! I’m not one for club music, but this is one of the most infectious hooks of the 80s.

  68. Third Uncle – Bauhaus’ cover of Brian Eno, kicked up several notches by Daniel’s swirling, spiraling guitar. A must for a Bauhaus/Ash playlist.

  69. Richard Fingard

Lions – so against type and unique

  70. Janice Sirois

It has to be ‘GO’…..just classic!

  71. Tones on Tail – Christian Says!

  72. Lonnie Locascio

Yin and Yang .. Christian Says … and Spooky … but seriously, I can’t stop listening to any of the Bauhaus family tree! Absolute favorites! First time I listened to In The Flat Field (which was on cassette, mind you) I was hooked! :)

  73. Haunted (when the minutes drag)

  74. David Darrow

Burning Skies – always thought it would be a good name for a band, too

  75. GO! I listen to it almost every day while working out. It puts me in the best mood!

  76. Slice of Life. He nails it

  77. Eva Schweber

    Anything by the Bubblemen.

  78. “Shes in Parties” by Bauhaus

  79. No New Tale to Tale. Catchy strummy hook, spooky kinky lyrics, coolest video ever as Ash saunters up quietly in head to toe leather with his guitar.

  80. All In My Mind

  81. My favorite Daniel Ash song is “Candy Darling”, that first minute always made me think of a gothic Baywatch with its atmosphere, a black haired Pamela Anderson; then when Dan comes in with his guitar, like a lightning bolt and his smooth voice, it just completes it.

  82. It could be Sunshine-great tempo!

  83. american dream, song just flows so well

  84. “Me and My Shadow”….. smooth, mellow, trippy….

  85. Performance- Tones on tail is simply superb!

  86. This Love. Burned this out on my college radio station. Reminds me of those good times.

  87. Real Life because I dig the sound.

  88. Kick In The Eye, by Bauhaus. The first song I’ve heard from the band, so groovy bassline !

  89. William O'Donnell

Twist, by Tones On Tail, for being what pop music on Mars must sound like.

  90. “All in My Mind” Love & Rockets – 2 excellent versions for different moods.

  91. Love and Rockets, “So Alive.” First record by L&R I owned and I still can remember how amazed I was when this started playing. I always re-listen to remember to never lose my sense of wonder.

  92. Third Uncle, because I like their bouncy version of this Eno tune.

  93. All in My Mind

  94. Kundalini Express

  95. Favorite artist of all time! I’ve been waiting to acquire this CD, did not participate in the Pledge music (unfortunately). Too many favorites, but with Stripped he finally created a version of ‘So Alive’ that I really enjoy.

  96. “Go” by TOT-it is a keeper!

  97. Rain (ToT) – a fantastic listen that I can repeat over and over and over
Kundalini Express (L&R) – an amazing journey from beginning to end
No New Tale to Tell (L&R) – been covering this song for years so it is personal for me
Holiday on the Moon (L&R) – just because

** I think David J wrote the lyrics for those L&R songs I listed so not sure if they can be called Daniel Ash songs but he probably wrote the guitar parts on those songs so I included them.

  98. Coming Down. Sexy glam stomper and a great bookmark of them olden days.

  99. Love and Rockets – “Love Me” from the Express album. I was blown away by this song the first time I seen them play it live.

  100. All In My Mind… Why? Have you listened to it? Brilliant!

  101. The Passion of Lovers. Because its one of the greatest tracks of all time!

  102. “all in my mind” is such a beautiful song, and it’s lyrics are so incredibly TRUE! I love all the selections above, but this one sticks with me always :) “But if you look into your mirror
    You’ll see that nobody
    Has ever ripped you off
    It’s all in your mind”

  103. camille owens

All in my mind. -it takes me back to a sweet love of life time. it’s just simply my fav

  104. Yin and Yang (the Flower Pot Man) because L&R opened with it when I saw them in ’89. Absolutely exhilarating!

  105. All In My Mind (not the slow version)

My personal favorite of Love and Rockets. This song goes places if that makes sense. The line “if you give me an hour I’ll show you how you feel” is is clever. Nothing is out of place on this track. It is perfect.

  106. Sergio Valencia

My favorite is All In My Mind [Acoustic] because the guitar is so intricate, yet so dreamy that it just kills me that I can’t play that song. Also goes with the intro of An American Dream.

  107. “Twist” ..

    ..from Northampton to Mars.

  108. No New Tale to Tell

  109. “Candy Darling” is my favorite Daniel Ash song. I’ve never heard a song quite like it, very dark and entrancing!

  110. Slice of Life was my initial reaction because it is smooth and silky and has great music & vocals.

But then I was reading the other comments and I came to this conclusion:

Motherfucking SLENDER FUNGUS!!!!!!!!! It’s catchy and fun.

  111. “This Love”

    Thanks!

  112. Foolish Thing Desire, the song. Simply an incredible track. It is hard to pick one song because I pretty much love all his songs.

  113. So Alive, I remember the music video jumping out at me from the television. At the time I was just coming out of a “hair metal” phase, so this was my introduction to Love And Rockets and Bauhaus. From here I discovered great new music and have never looked back!

  114. Angela Smith

So Alive will probably always be my favorite!

  115. She’s in parties by Bauhaus

  116. There is too many to list. Of Lillies and Remains, Nerves, Boys from the Bela Lugosi single is probably my favorite. Although, you can’t go wrong with anything from Tones on Tails or Express.

  117. Burning Skies. Danny at his best.

  118. Joseph Kaye

All in my Mind – still so hopeful.

  119. “Love Me,” I suppose, for unprintable reasons that have to do with dating one girl for a while, then breaking up and dating her roommate and climbing in through her bedroom window to keep it secret. Oh, college. Where did times like that go?

But it could have been any one of a dozen songs off the first two L&R albums, or anything off Tones On Tail’s “The Album Pop.” Those were basically my soundtrack to ages 19-21 way back in the day. I still have my ticket stub from seeing Love & Rockets with Jane’s Addiction opening, around 1987 or so in Portland. That was a cool evening.

    Dang, now I’m all nostalgic.

  120. Mike McCann

Slice Of Life – always reminds me of a super-sexy girl I crushed on in the early 90s!

  121. “So Alive”; everytime I hear it I’m right back to where I was when it was new.

  122. Love and Rockets – Trip and Glide

Great song featuring Natacha Atlas sounding like she’s having great sex. The guitar work is incredible and has a nice feel because of the sublimation, it doesn’t overshadow Natacha.

  123. Love and Rockets – So Alive
This song has stayed in my head for years and years. I may not remember where my car keys are, but I know the lyrics to this song!

  124. Brett James

All in My Mind. Killer beginning.

  125. Jungle Law – this song hit at a time in my life when I needed something, anything. I fell into my music, L&R, Echo, Cure, Jane’s. Anyway, Jungle Law was a soundtrack to my adolescence and it meant the world to me. I think every girl I ever wrote a love letter to inadvertently got a Daniel Ash quote tossed into the prose. I explained that to Daniel many years later in LA. We enjoyed a great laugh over it.

  126. “Saudade”. If you want to travel to the astral plane or just mellow out around the pad, this is the song to get you there!

  127. Love Me… Simply LOVE that song!

  128. “Get Out of Control” It simply rocks with a typical L&R groove.

  129. Michele Cauvel

All In My Mind…the 80’s come rushing back!! Perfection!!!

  130. Saudade – LP on turntable, headphones, early teen years, longing.

  131. “All We Ever Wanted Was Everything” one of the best song from Bauhaus era imho. I like atmosphere of this song

  132. All in My Mind is primo

  133. Bauhaus – Hair of the Dog, love that song to no end.

  134. Perry Waring

    There’s only one.

  135. Shawn Terry

“Burning Skies” by Tones On Tail. Thick with atmosphere, and that E-bow guitar!

  136. Iceblink Luck

Holiday on the Moon. Brings back memories of going out to goth clubs.

  137. Love And Rockets “It Could Be Sunshine” The entire Express CD is amazing!

  138. “Go” It always makes me feel in a mood to dance

  139. “Go” It always makes me feel in a mood to dance

  140. Love And Rockets, Mirror People. My first listen to him and made me look into Bauhaus and Tone On Tails.

  141. “The Bubblemen Are Coming”. Love and Rockets learned to not take themselves too seriously!

  142. The Dog-End Of A Day Gone By, the guitar playing is amazing and unique, the lyrics create imagery that I just love. P.S. Daniel please keep the songs coming!!

    • Great drum work as well. This one is another example of the L&R principle that no member or instrument is the star. No matter how simple or complex the song, everything has the right amount and never too much of anything.

  143. That would be No New Tale To Tell. Excellent song.

  144. DARK ENTRIES! DARK ENTRIES’

  145. Haunted When the Minutes Drag- I lost my virginity to it. (Shhhh)

  146. Twist.
    For the surf feeling.

  147. “When You’re Smiling” – Tones on Tail. For some reason, I’ve always liked this atmospheric piece. I play it a lot around Halloween.

  148. Real Life – Tones on Tail. The music combined with the power of the words – LOVE IT!

  149. An American Dream

  150. I recently picked up “foolish thing desire” and was BLOWN away, really hard to pick a favorite. But I guess I’ll go with the title track.

  151. “I Feel Speed”. Because no other band has the balls to give that title to a song so slow and dreamy.

  152. “So Alive” is my favorite. I can still sing every word.

  153. Go! It’s the quintessential 80’s dance song. takes me back to college every time I hear it!!

  154. “Rain” – Tones on Tail Perfectly captures Daniel’s exquisitely soft approach to the lyrics. Dewdrops of pure beauty. Always loved his softer side like the “Teardrop Collector’ and the Coming Down album.

  155. All In My Mind was always my favorite vocal performance from him. It showcased his sneer and delicacy in vocal styles all in one song.

  156. Paul Whiatker

    Bela Lugosi’s Dead

  157. Gimme

  158. Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven – Love and Rockets. While I’ve always enjoyed Bauhaus/Tones on Tails/Love and Rockets, I just didnt hear anything that just made me LOVE them. When I heard Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven, it really struck a chord that renewed my appreciation for them and their talents.

  159. Derek Cornish

I’m a huge fan of “rain” by Tones On Tale. It just sets the mood……

  160. This Love – just as I was discovering Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, & Tones On Tail at the tender age of 15 I saw the premiere of the video on 120 Minutes and thought that song was the coolest thing ever!

  161. Ralph Izzard

“She’s In Parties”. Distinguished mention to “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” too, though. And kudos for pulling off the trick of making a cover of “Ziggy Stardust” that’s actually better than the original.

  162. “An American Dream” very relatable.

  163. “The Push” with Astra Heights. Such a sweet, funky tune – genius!
….but seriously, too many tracks to choose from

  164. Roll On…from Foolish Thing Desire. Just a damn good bouncy tune and you can tell he had a blast recording it. Great mix of old 60’s psych pop, fuzz guitars, hand claps and a big wall of sound type production. *thumbs up*

  165. Fran Murnaghan

I absolutely must win that Daniel Ash CD. Hard to pick a favorite song. To pick a show, instead of a song, it would be Love & Rockets with the Pixies opening up back in 1989.

  166. Love Me….the harmony is just beautiful ..music is haunting…wonderful song for the dark…Man I miss L&R

  167. I’m going to have to buy a VCR so I can watch The Haunted Fishtank I’ve had for nearly 25 years. My dad hated all the music I liked, so I asked him to watch this in its entirety and then comment. He couldn’t deny that L&R were very good. Daniel Ash should have fame on the level of Michael Jackson and wealth of Bill Gates.

I don’t care if I win a copy of the CD (well, I’d love to win, who doesn’t?). What is just as good is seeing the flood of post from people who recognize this artist. Artist is thrown around to easily in most cases, but not in the case of Mr. Ash.

I mentioned conceptualization and execution in an earlier post and I think it is important when calling a musician an artist. Art is durable and is still important years on. I think the members of L&R had a lot of forward-looking vision, even if that was never an intention.

I feel very strongly about the body of work of L&R and Mr. Ash. I dare to say 200 or more years from now his work will be seen like those of Mozart, ET AL. What I’d really like to see is bigger recognition in his own lifetime.

  168. Marcelo araujo

This Love is my favourite song. It reminds me of a girl who was the love of my life.

  169. jeffrey dias

    Dark Entries

  170. Colton Rawlings

    “Holiday On The Moon”
    Love and Rockets…

You can’t get a suntan on the moon..

  171. Jeff Sturges

“Burning Skies” makes perfect sense when it is raining outside.

  172. Ian Christensen

“Rain”. The atmosphere of the song is enveloping.

  173. Yin and Yang and the Flower Pot Man
    Great guitar work!

  174. While his cover of “Spooky” was great and “Lions” as well as “Go!” have always been favorites, the one I think i’d have to call my favorite was “Real Life.” Just a great, great track. So hard to choose, regardless.

  175. “No Big Deal” is my favorite. Really rocks.

  176. Probably Love and Rockets …. well, All in My Mind.
Just a perfect pop song! Timeless!

  177. Seventh Dream of a Teenage Heaven. A truly unique sound at the time that no one has ever duplicated.

  178. “No New Tale To Tell” is probably my favorite. The words are very zen-like and the music rocks. It has a great dichotomy.

  179. chris flisek

“No New Tale to Tell” by Love & Rockets. I remember seeing the video on 120 Minutes. Becoming obsessed. Buying the record and then learning about Bauhaus and working my way back. It was a gateway drug.

  180. Today, it is All in My Mind, the slow acoustic version because it is melancholy and gorgeous.

  181. “Mirror People,” because “I could be nothing at all” and it fires me up more than any other song.

  182. Get out if control (Prostrated mix-J.G. Thirlwell) great choice to remix this song!

  183. “Twist”…the mix of Dr. Seuss-ian lyrics, the seagulls, that amazing bass-line, Daniel’s usual inventive guitar madness and that freakout toward the end. This song has more going on in it’s 5+ minutes than some bands drag out over an entire album (or career). This one from Tones on Tail has that quintessential “pop group from Mars” sound that Daniel was aiming for.

  184. Coming Down Fast

    Reminds me of ….coming down.

  185. Steven Tivey

An American Dream….always loved Mr. Ash’s guitar work on this one :)

  186. “You, the Night, the Music”. There is so much to like from Daniel, but a couple of the tracks from Tones on Tails really move me in ways that nothing else does by him.

Hell…some of it is more moving than pretty much anything else I know.

  187. It’s hard to choose only one, but this morning I was listening to his second album while driving to work, and I got to choose “Foolish Thing Desire”, because it has his trademark whispery haunting/chilling vocals vibe to it, and that great acoustic/electric guitar blend.

  188. I’d have to go with No Big Deal

  189. So many good ones, but I’ll go with ““Christian Says”. Love the delivery on this one; kinda menacing, but overall the tune is just catchy.

Miss seeing him live. Caught many Love and Rockets shows back in the day.

  190. Burning skies – I am always transferred to a place just before the sky will go out. And then it comes and it is completely personal. Yet through it all tranquility returns just like that. The horror did me good.

  191. She’s In Parties – superb song with great guitars by Daniel. Even after all those years, it still sends shivers down my spine…

  192. It is so very difficult to choose one, so I will not choose.

  193. Haunted When The Minutes Drag

    ‘Cause…

This is for when you feel happy
And this is for when you feel sad
And this is for when you feeeeel…
    Nothing.

  194. Motorcyle. Simple Immensity.

  195. Christian Says because the opening guitar has a way of reeling me in every time.

  196. Bill Purcell

    “No Big Deal”

  197. Jason Taylor

“Bela Lugosi’s Dead” It was the first song I ever heard by Bauhaus

  198. “Haunted”—just great atmospherics

  199. “She’s in Parties” – my 16 year old daughter is a fan – I attribute it to her hearing Bauhaus live in 1998 (in utero) and kicking up a storm!

  200. So alive

  201. ‘Get Out of Control’ for solo work <3
'Haunted (when the minured drag….) for L&R
    'Christian Says' for Tones
    And…
    Telegram Sam for Bauhaus

  202. Nigel Waghorne

Burning Skies-mesmeric start, then a spine-tingling back-jarring injection of distortion, love it!

  203. Kathy fioretti

mirror people. I spent a year trying to figure out what the lyric meant.

  204. Taylor Platt

    “This Love”

When the CD “Coming Down” came out, I got it immediately. I played it repeatedly that summer. “This Love” was what got me hooked. The whole CD is burned into my memory.

  205. Motorcycle. Classic “driving” song. I listen to it all the time while I’m riding.

  206. Favorite song: Movement Of Fear (Tones on Tail)
    Reason: atmosphere

  207. Rain! Makes me feel like i lived another life :)

  208. Kerowin St Clair

No new tale to tell !

  209. The song “Twist” from his Tones on Tails days. The dark bass line with the surf-style guitar riffs make it fantastic track. I played this song all the time during my college radio DJ days.

  210. “Haunted When The Minutes Drag”, the song is absolutely perfect in every way. I still get chills when it come on.

  211. Christian says…

  212. Ball of confusion, ball of confusion
That’s what the world is today
    Hey hey!

  213. Cruel contest – it’s like Sophie’s Choice! Haunted When the Minutes Drag (Love & Rockets) made She’s Having A Baby worth sitting through! It was good fun a few years ago when my daughter & her Emo friends thought Bella Legosi is Dead would shock me and I started singing along…love that song still.
Still have my cassettes from L&R, ToT & Bauhaus – always a go-to when the soul needs replenishing!

  214. Dave Lindquist

    No New Tale To Tell

  215. holiday on the moon.

  216. Bela Lugosi’s Dead, Bauhaus. Love the killer bass line!!!

  217. Michael Grillo

Performamce: years ahead of its time, dark and evocative ebm.

  218. Alain Rivest

    Kundalini express

  219. all in my mind

  220. So Alive – it’s all about the legs

  221. “Christian Says” (Tones on Tail) …. Why? Because Christian Says!

  222. Clark Ghitis

    kundalini express

I love the way the song grinds out that crunchy distortion.

  223. This Love. Those guitars.

  224. Kundalini Express. Bauhaus have been one of my favorite bands for over 30 years. However, this song was so incredibly different from anything Daniel and the Haskins brothers had ever done before, it stood out, screaming, “we don’t just do Goth music”!

  225. No New Tale to Tell.

  226. Double Dare (Bauhaus) – so ominous

  227. “Lagartija Nick” because it’s like a Hieronymus Bosch painting come to life.

  228. Christian Says & Go! It is too hard to pick one song from the soundtrack of my life. I could name more but these are my über favs.

  229. Dennis Grisez

Mirror People. It’s got such a hard away to it.

  230. Shakes.

  231. Saudade – very beautiful, dreamy piece of music.

  232. All In My Mind – smokin’ blend of goth and pop, catchy from the first listen

  233. I’m listening to Judgement Day from Sweet F.A. right now, which is just an awesome example of the raw riffs he comes up with, and the beautiful dynamics of some of the best L&R songwriting. It just kind of lulls you into this chilled out atmosphere, then bam! It hits you over the head with THAT RIFF. Of course I can’t pick my favorite but because I have to here I’m going to say The Light. Because wow, that e-bow, that atmosphere, just wow.

  234. I’ll give you 4. For me it has to be either “Burning Skies” with Tones On Tail, “It Could Be Sunshine” with Love & Rockets, or “The Sanity Assassin” with Bauhaus. For his solo work, I’d agree with a previous post for “Get Out of Control” from Foolish Thing Desire. (Sadly none of the above are featured on Stripped, but that’s ok!) I’ve been a fan for 25+ years, and I think that the songs mentioned above not only display his varied playing styles and obvious talent, they all carry his distinct sonic signature; gloomy and distorted, yet energetic and glam.

  235. Wow, too many to mention…it changes regularly – but I’ve got to go with An American Dream…this song is magic, epic and perfectly caps off a brilliant LP so ingrained in the adventures of my youth.

  236. So Alive.

1989, driving out of the baked desert city in which I lived out to where there was grass on the ground. This new Love and Rockets cassette in the stereo. So Alive is on and the women are singing right as the cool air hit the rolled down windows. I knew I loved her and wished she were there.

  237. She’s in Parties is my favorite of all time, I love to dance to it!

  238. Mark Whiteley

    An American Dream

  239. All In My Mind by Love and Rockets is one of my favourites. Aside from being a great song, Daniel is GORGEOUS in the video! So Alive is a second favourite and Ball of Confusion is the best cover of that song ever made.

  240. Kevin Beekman

“A God in an Alcove” It swings. And bounces.

  241. Brandy Gunderson

Delicious Ocean. It makes me smile.

  242. robin foster

Love me…dirty song that sums me up

  243. Tones on Tail, Go! – great track.

  244. ‘The Light’, off of Earth, Sun, Moon. Preferrably cranked SUPER LOUD

  245. Hallow Weener

“Burning Skies” from Tones on Tail. The way it seemlessly blends ambient sounds w/rockin’ out vibes. The two feelings bouncing back and forth…”the horror did me good, the magic was on my side”

  246. Mackenzie Wild

My favorite Daniel Ash song is No Big Deal. I love the rock and roll feel of this song. When I hear this song, it makes me feel confident and free.

  247. Burning Skies by Tones on Tail – it is just about the best song around.

  248. Gonçalo Vasco

Definitely Sanity Assassin, such an immense song, open to so many interpretations. We’re all mad here.

  249. There are sooooooo many Bauhaus, Love And Rockets and solo songs that are just absolutely amazing… but I will say “This Heaven” from Hot Trip to Heaven album, awesome album to have sex to! Have been a devoted fan since 1985!!!

  250. Even thought it’s a cover, I’m going with BALL OF CONFUSION! I’ll never get sick of hearing it! And I’ve TRIED! I don’t know how I haven’t burnt that cd out!!!

  251. Carolyn Muracz

Bela Lugosi is dead by Bauhaus because it is the first song I heard him sing and I fell in love with his voice

  252. London Lunoux

Jungle Law! This was a tough choice but I always loved this song because it was unique and catchy and fun!

  253. The hedonist

    Atmospheric. Honest, overlooked, and understated

  254. ‘Haunted When The Minutes Drag,’ always a great song live.

  255. Heather Anne

    No big deal.

    Love you Daniel Ash!!

  256. “The Light” is my favorite. It represents a certain aspect of L&R which was psychedelic and mystical but not overt. Mysterious is the word I suppose.

  257. “In Fear of Fear” due to Mr. Ash’s wild and frenetic saxaphonish orgasmtude.

  258. “It Could Be Sunshine” to Love & Rockets, with this song saw the light!!!

  259. “Closer to you” – Just don’t know why – Maybe that’s the reason!

  260. Performance – Tones on Tail – I’ve got way too many favorites that I can’t really choose but this song just has that inspiring & driving feel every time I listen to it ! ;-)

  261. Ashley Zimmerman

“Out of Control” I love the idea of not worrying about tomorrow and just having a great time and just enjoying yourself. It always puts me in an upbeat mood and its just a fantastic tune all together.

  262. Rain—- ´cause it flows, washes, crashes, fades & rains me away—-

  263. Chris Hanington

“Haunted When The Minutes Drag” from Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven LP. Listen to it load and in the dark…one amazing piece of art!

  264. Too many to choose from! I love Double Dare, Mirror people, Yin and Yang, and many more! I was lucky enough to meet L&R backstage at their concert. I also got to see Bauhaus on their latest tour. Also saw Daniel in Seattle. I love these guys! Would like to be one of the first to hear the new songs!

  265. Chelsea and The Bubblemen are Coming
Chelsea: because it is simply sublime

The Bubblemen are Coming: Because it is one of the rarest kind of songs I have heard. It’s become a mystery to me because it is the only vinyl I don’t have but I have been searching for it for years in Mexico. My inability to find it has made it an obsession of mine.

  266. No New Tale To Tell. I stumbled upon it on the NYC show “120 Minutes” in Jr. High, back when it was released, and it opened up the doors to a whole new world of music. I’ll never forget being 14 and going to Berkeley on a school night with my best friend to see them in concert. Good times!

  267. “The soldiers of everyday” it´s my favourite daniel ash song: The thing it´s that I can´t get out of my mind that f… great song, thanks daniel!

  268. Yin and Yang the Flower Pot Man! Because it’s beauty, beauty, beauty, beautiful! :)

  269. BAMMBAMM NUHNUHNUH

I cannot pick a favorite. This man is one of 3 “musical idols” I have in my life. He has influenced not only my song writing and especially guitar playing, but I’ve spent many many high nights with him and his musical genius.

  270. “Burning Skies”
love the combination of vocal and lyrics anyway.

  271. Marcelo Pimentel

    So alive!!! Sure!!! :))

  272. Tough one, great musician with many favourite songs.
I would choose ”come alive”, i always listen it before i go out to bars ,parties etc..it gets me going and puts me in naughty mode :)It shows the diversity of Daniel Ash,a mixture of his dirty signature guitar sound with harsh sleazy dirty punk electrobeats that fuck your head, its like a natural drug and a great song to set the mood in a techno dj set

  273. ‘Too Much Choice’ . . . .”Candy Floss and Chocolate Cake”

  274. Haunted When the Minutes Drag….

  275. “The Void” because I love his unique acoustic guitar style.

  276. Gotta go with “Holiday on the moon” from his love and rockets days. This one just melts away the work week while I drive home late on friday nights, Ahhhhhh

  277. “Hollywood Fix” just pure adrenaline, the best song I’ve ever heard.
