British music mag NME later this month will bestow its “Godlike Genius” award to Johnny Marr of The Smiths, and in conjunction with the issue celebrating that honor — that’s the cover up above — the guitarist recorded a couple videos for the publication’s “Song Stories” series in which he offers insight into the writing of the Smiths’ “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” and his new solo single, “Upstarts.” Check out both clips below.

Very nice to hear how that came about!
Boy, hearing that riff “live” of Heaven…makes me wish things would have been different with the Smiths. Johnny needed Morrissey and viceversa. They both complemented each other well and to imagine what kind of music they could be producing today would be a dream….but alas…it is only that. Bottom line for me…I rather they produced 5 good years of music as opposed to not have had the pleasure of the Smiths.
