Today we launch a new weekly series here on Slicing Up Eyeballs with the debut of “120 Minutes” Rewind, which, as the name suggests, will feature highlights from the classic Sunday night alternative program that we’ve culled from the depths of YouTube. We start the series with a clip of unusually good video quality, a nine-minute reel from summer 1990 that saw Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore and drummer Steve Shelley sitting down to talk about the band’s just-released Goo album with host Dave Kendall.
This footage, courtesy of uploader jakeopooh, also includes the weekly college radio countdown, featuring records from Gene Loves Jezebel, Ultra Vivid Scene and The Railway Children among heavier hitters such as Jane’s Addiction and the Pixies, plus Kendall’s decked out in an amazing ensemble consisting of a Killing Joke T-shirt, what appear to be Ramones boxer shorts and a Batman baseball cap (“Do you ever wake up in the morning and think, ‘Today I’m going to wear something really stupid?'” Kendall himself notes).
Check out the clip above, and share your “120 Minutes” memories in the comments below.
