No stranger to unexpected covers, Elvis Costello currently is in the midst of his revived “Spinning Songbook” tour and is treating fans at many of the trek’s stops to a show-stopping blast through Prince’s 1984 epic “Purple Rain.” Above, you can check out one of the better clips available of Costello and The Imposters channeling the Purple One on May 24 at New York City’s Beacon Theatre.

Years ago Prince wouldn’t let Elvis release a cover of “Pop Life” on one of his albums. I got a live version off of Napster years ago. It was a cool cover. I guess Costello doesn’t have the cred that Alicia Keys and TLC have :(
