Former Galaxie 500 frontman Dean Wareham will commemorate the recent reissuing of the long-defunct dream-pop act’s entire catalog with a special and very rare one-off concert at a club in Atlanta this fall during which he will be “performing the Galaxie 500 songbook.”
Dubbed “Dean Wareham Plays Galaxie 500,” the concert is set for Sept. 17 at The Earl, and will find Wareham backed by wife and current bandmate Britta Phillips, plus Dean & Britta members Anthony Lamarca and Matt Sumrow. The concert’s co-promoter, Party Panda Productions, writes on its MySpace blog: “They are playing a full set of Galaxie 500 songs! 1st time in probably 20 yrs since Dean has done this.”
Earlier this year, Galaxie 500’s three albums — 1988’s Today, 1989’s On Fire and 1990’s This Is Our Music — each were reissued in expanded, 2CD sets. Each includes one of the three collections released following the band’s 1991 break-up: Today is accompanied by Uncollected, a 14-track compilation originally included in the band’s 1996 box set; On Fire includes Peel Sessions, the group’s 2005 collection of BBC radio recordings; and This Is Our Music features Copenhagen, the 2007 live album recorded Dec. 1, 1990.
And in related news, Pitchfork this week posted a great oral history of Galaxie 500 featuring fresh interviews with Wareham and bandmates Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang, among others. Check it out.

Of all places, it has to be in Atlanta! sigh.
You reported this morning that Dean Wareham will be playing Galaxie 500 songs in Atlanta in September, and quoted the promoter as saying, “1st time in probably 20 yrs since Dean has done this.” In fact, Dean and Britta played an all-G500 set in New York in August 2008. The entire set was recorded by an audience member and is available for download at The Sound of Indie:
