The Pogues’ Shane MacGowan premiered the video of his all-star cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ swampy 1956 classic “I Put a Spell on You” — proceeds from which will benefit the victims of Haiti’s devastating earthquake — at the Shockwaves NME Awards in London on Wednesday night.
The video, shown above, finds MacGowan joined in the studio by the likes of Nick Cave, Mick Jones of The Clash (on both guitar and fire hydrant), the Sex Pistols’ Glen Matlock, Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders and Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie — not to mention Johnny Depp, who turns in a bluesy guitar solo near the end of the clip.
Proceeds from the sale of the “I Put a Spell On You” single — recorded last month and due out digitally on March 8 — will benefit Concern Worldwide, an Irish charity that long has done work in Haiti. For those in the UK, the song can be pre-ordered now via 7digital; it eventually will be available on the U.S. version of the site, too.
