While Lollapalooza is a decidedly ’90s cultural event, this year’s installment— according to Chicago Tribune rock critic Greg Kot’s sources — will take on a something of an ’80s bent with headliners Jane’s Addiction, Depeche Mode and the Beastie Boys.
As Kot’s “Sound Opinions” co-host Jim DeRogatis noted, it’s “Lollapalooza 1986… er, um, I mean 2009.”
The festival is set for Chicago’s Grant Park for the fifth time Aug. 7 through 9.
Lolla reps haven’t confirmed the lineup, although Jane’s is certainly a sure thing, considering its joint tour with Nine Inch Nails features a Chicago date earlier in the summer that only NIN is playing.
This would mark the third time the recently re-reunited Jane’s Addiction has played Lollapalooza; the band headlined the first installment in 1991 as well as the relaunched edition in 2003 (sans Eric Avery), which turned out to be the fest’s final incarnation as a tour.
The Beasties played the ’94 installment.
