This summer not only will see the release of Sonic Youth’s next proper album — The Eternal, due June 8 — but also the eighth release in the band’s long-running SYR series of experimental and mostly instrumental recordings.
Set to drop July 28, SYR 8 will be a CD-only release featuring the complete, improvised “Other Sides of Sonic Youth” performance — featuring the band, joined by then-sideman Jim O’Rourke, Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson and Japanese sound artist Merzbow — from the 2005 Roskilde Festival in Denmark.
The single piece “was a structured improvisation, which, for 60 minutes, added and subtracted musicians one by one until only (Merzbow) was left on stage,” according to the band. “Black Sabbath followed.”
The disc can be ordered here.
