The second-annual Record Store Day is less than two weeks out, and the list of exclusive releases being prepped for the April 18 support-your-local-shop shindig is growing more impressive daily.
Artists ranging from Radiohead and My Morning Jacket to Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and even the defunct Pavement are issuing special vinyl releases for the event, cooked up to show support for one of America’s greatest endangered species: independently owned record stores.
Stores from coast to coast also are hosting performances by the likes of The Breeders, Prefuse 73 and Jason Lytle of Grandaddy.
This year sees a bevy of new and vintage releases from ’80s college-rock icons, including reissues from The Smiths, Jane’s Addiction, Bad Religion, New Order and Talking Heads.
Depeche Mode and Elvis Costello also will be issuing 7-inches of new singles off their upcoming records.
And Sonic Youth fans, in particular, should take note: Matador Records is releasing 2,500 copies each of two split 7-inches featuring the band. One will include Sonic Youth’s “No Garage” and Jay Reatard’s “Hang Them All,” while the other will feature SY covering Beck’s “Pay No Mind” and Beck covering SY’s “Green Light.”
Over in the U.K., Rough Trade is issuing C09, a special cassette compilation modeled after the legendary C86 comp. This year’s model features cuts from The Decemberists, Super Furry Animals, British Sea Power and more.

Looking forward to another RSD! Thanks for following on Twitter.
Hope I get to paint some of the ’80s bands you’ve discussed. It was my music growing up so it means a lot to me.
Peace.
