Still stuck in Istanbul, Peter Murphy pushes entire San Francisco residency to summer

After repeated reschedulings and scheduling gymnastics, Peter Murphy — still unable to get a visa to come to the U.S. from Turkey — has pulled the plug on this month’s 15-night San Francisco residency, pushing all of the dates to June and July.

See the new dates, as announced by the venue, below.

In a post to his Facebook page, Murphy says “the entire residency is now being moved to a June/July period,” and that fans should watch for new dates to be announced “shortly.” He offers no apology or explanation to ticketholders for the repeated delays and reschedulings.

In a separate post, Bauhaus bassist David J, who was to join his former bandmate for three of the San Francisco concerts, writes, “So sorry that it came to this. Peter and his team did everything that they could to make it happen. Looking forward to the rescheduled dates!”

Murphy’s plans for a San Francisco residency have been trouble-plagued from the start. The concerts originally were announced to take place last June and July, but were rescheduled to 2018 after issues arose with the singer’s vocal chords that forced him call off the run.

The concerts will find Murphy performing “a retrospective of his greatest solo albums in their entirety,” as well as three once-concluding nights — now in the middle of the rejiggered run — devoted to Bauhaus material, at which Murphy will be joined by has former bandmate David J to play bass in his band.

The rescheduled run was supposed to have started last week, but The Chapel first said it was preemptively re-rescheduling the Jan. 23 and 24 opening of the residency, and combining them as a single show on Feb. 1, due to “unforeseen governmental delay in the processing of Peter’s visa application including the shutdown of the federal government.”

A late-January concert was canceled as Murphy remained in Istanbul. Then the weekend shows, too, were bumped, with the blame now assigned to a diplomatic spat. And then more were rescheduled last week.
