For this week’s installment of Vintage Video, we’ll revisit a rarity we first shared about four years ago: The Cure’s lost relic of The Top era, a 90-minute concert film called “Live in Japan” that documents the band’s Oct. 17, 1984, performance in Tokyo — and which was released the following year on VHS and Betamax in Japan only.
Like the better-known “The Cure in Orange,” “Live in Japan” has never been released on DVD, nor was it widely available in the U.S. It captures the short-lived lineup that found frontman Robert Smith backed by drummer Andy Anderson, guitarist Porl Thompson, keyboardist Lol Tolhurst and bassist Phil Thornalley.
The version we posted back in 2013 is long scrubbed from YouTube, but as Dangerous Minds points out, a fresh copy of the film has been uploaded — apparently by Anderson himself.
Watch the full concert film below.
