As fans of 10,000 Maniacs can attest, the band didn’t end with the departure of Natalie Merchant in 1993 — in fact, with the help of those very generous fans, the Maniacs in January released their first new album in 14 years, the Pledge Music-funded Music From the Motion Picture, the third record to feature Mary Ramsey on lead vocals.
Below, you can watch an animated music video for the album’s lead-off track, “I Don’t Love You Too.” The band currently has dates U.S. scattered throughout spring and summer — check those out below, too.

UGH NO GO AWAY!!!!!!! Oh wait, Natalie Merchant isn’t being a completely annoying, self absorbed, elitist, humorless, conceited nuisance on the album? OK bring it on!
i think she was almost all of those things at various moments in the maniacs. i also think they were a great band with her for a few years. totally unique, and her voice never sounded the same after she left.
10,000 Maniac without Natalie Merchant.
That’s funny!
The Doors without Jim Morrison, The Beatles without John Lennon, R.E.M. without Michael Stipe, Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger, INXS without Michael Hutchence, The Cure without Robert Smith.
That’s funny!!!
Genesis without Peter Gabriel? Uhm, wait a sec… lemme find a different example.
Van Halen without David Lee Roth. BUT were Genesis or Van Halen ever as good without them? NO.
The lead singer of 10,000 Maniacs is Natalie Merchant. Period.
I hate when people will put down a band for wanting to continue when their original singer leaves. Does that mean the rest of the band gives up on their music and the name they’ve been building for themselves? Some bands contain more talent than their vocalists.
Are any of the original members still in the band? Doesn’t sound anything like 10,000 Maniacs. More like a bad CVB rip-off.
I believe that original members Dennis Drew (keyboards), Steve Gustufson (bass), and Jerry Augustyniack (drums) are still part of the band. Original guitarist Robert Buck passed away a number of years ago. Mary Ramsey, the singer, was a backing vocalist on the last couple of LPs with Natalie Merchant.
Here’s a fun fact on the band. Their single biggest charting hit on Billboard was “More than This” and that back in 1996 with Mary Ramsey singing lead. Natalie left 20 years ago and the band is doing just fine, the city winery show last night in chicago was sold out months in advance…
Can’t say I like this new album…… :(
