Former Miracle Legion frontman Mark Mulcahy returns this summer with Dear Mark J Mulcahy I Love You, his fifth solo album and first 2005’s In Pursuit of Your Happiness — and he’s previewing the Fire Records release with the brand-new song “She Makes the World Turn Backwards,” which premiered at RollingStone.com and can be streamed below.
The new album and some accompanying tour dates are a comeback of sorts for Mulcahy following the death of his wife in 2008, a tragedy that spurred the Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy benefit album featuring covers recorded by Michael Stipe, Black Francis and Dinosaur Jr.
Mulcahy tells Rolling Stone that he scrapped the songs he’d started following In Pursuit of Your Happiness and wrote the 11 new songs featured on Dear Mark J Mulcahy specifically for a single record.
He says:
“I don’t think I’ve ever actually written a record to be a record. Usually I just have songs that I’ve written at different times. This was all written just for this. They go together in some way. People always use the term ‘song cycle,’ which I don’t know what that means — it sounds a little funky. But it’s something like that.”
Dear Mark J Mulcahy I Love You is due out June 18. Mulcahy also has announced a handful of tour dates in the U.S. and U.K. this summer, including an appearance at Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival.
Mark Mulcahy tour dates:
June 12: Spaceland Ballroom, Hamden, CT, USA
June 21-23: Solid Sound Festival, North Adams, MA, USA
June 26: Johnny Brenda’s, Philadelphia, PA, USA
June 27: Mercury Lounge, New York, NY, USA
Aug. 29: Latest Musicbar, Brighton, UK
Aug. 30-Sept. 1: End of the Road Festival, North Dorset, UK
