Gibby Haynes and his acid-fried compatriots in the Butthole Surfers return to the road later this summer with a near-reunion of the band’s core ’80s lineup that will perform 11 concerts in the western U.S. and Vancouver, British Columbia, before returning home to Austin, Texas, for a tour-ending finale on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.
The trek, which opens Aug. 26 in San Diego, finds Haynes joined byPaul Leary, Jeff Pinkus and King Coffey, but not on-again, off-again drummer Teresa Taylor. As Coffey writes on the band’s messageboard, “Yeah, it’ll be just the dudes on this mini tour: Fort, Gibby, Pinkus and myself.”
Taylor rejoined the Butthole Surfers — whose name was famously sanitized as the “B.H. Surfers” during the band’s early-to-mid-’90s Lollapalooza stint and improbable, “Pepper”-fueled commercial breakthrough — in 2009 for the ’80s lineup’s first extensive U.S. tour in 20 years. Since then, the Butthole Surfers have played sporadically, including a show in Austin last fall that saw the band perform 1987’s Locust Abortion Technician in its entirety.
