World Party playing SXSW and NYC in March, releasing rarities box, plan full U.S. tour

Karl Wallinger of World Party

With a new multi-disc box set of rarities due this spring, Karl Wallinger will kick off World Party’s 25th anniversary year with three concerts at South By Southwest and two in New York City next month — a prelude for the band’s “most extensive U.S. tour since 2006.”

Neither a release date nor title has been set, but Wallinger announced Thursday that he plans to release a 4-to-5 CD World Party box set this spring “packed with unreleased studio gems and live recordings” via his own label, Seaview Records. The box set will be preceded by an all-new World Party song.

In March, Wallinger — who started World Party in 1986 after quitting The Waterboys — will take a full band to SXSW, playing three shows in two days before heading to New York City for two more concerts; the gigs are the band’s first U.S. dates since a short 2009 tour (see full dates below). Those shows, however, are being billed as merely  precursors to a full U.S. tour later this year. Dates are expected to be announced soon.

UPDATE 2/19/11: Show added in Boston as well.
