Video: Arcade Fire covers The Smiths’ ‘Still Ill’

Out on tour this fall in support of their chart-topping third album The Suburbs, indie-rock breakthrough act Arcade Fire whipped up a special treat for fans at their Mexico City concert on Oct. 13: a cover of “Still Ill,” the classic track from The Smiths’ 1984 self-titled debut album. It’s not the first time Win Butler and Co., have played the song — they performed it a few times in the U.K. in 2007, as well — but it’s not a regular fixture of their set. Check out the video above.

  1. I thought nothing could be worse than their SNL appearance. I was wrong.

  2. what they said ^^^^

  3. A different and fun cover – wish they’d done this in Vancouver! I loved their SNL appearance – both songs!

  4. Their new album is an absolute blinder. Probably the best band to come out in the last 20 years in my humble opinion.

  5. Great cover, and no surprise that an audience in this country really enjoyed singing along to Morrissey’s lyrics. P.S. Arcade Fire was tremendous on SNL, too.

  6. love it when the hip band of the moment attempts a cover like this – shows how weak Win’s vocals are…even Moz’s voice was weakest on the first album but he butchers it…let the accordionist sing it…she’s mouthing all the words…

  7. You have to listen to the original to appreciate how singularly horrible this cover is. “Weak” doesn’t begin to describe his voice. I had to immediately go to YouTube after this and listen to the Smiths version to get the bad taste out of my mouth.

  8. The video quality may have something to do with his vocals… I think they did a great job, it would sound better if it was actually recorded.
