Video: Alan Wilder joins Depeche Mode on stage at Royal Albert Hall in London

Alan Wilder performs with Depeche Mode's Martin Gore

Alan Wilder shocked Depeche Mode fans around the world tonight, joining his former band onstage for the first time in 16 years to accompany Martin Gore on piano during a performance of “Somebody” at a Teenage Cancer Trust charity concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

We’ve got several different videos of the brief reunion posted below — one of them is actually a two parter, strung together — as well as clips of several other songs from the Royal Albert Hall show, plus the full setlist. (See video after the jump.)

Wilder explains the reunion on his official site:

“Dave (Gahan) contacted me a few weeks back and asked if I’d be willing to join them on-stage. He assured me that everyone in the band was into the idea. I was very happy to accept, especially as it was all in a good cause and we were long overdue some kind of reunion of this sort. It was great to see everyone again and catch up a bit, and it was also the first time I have actually ’seen’ Depeche Mode perform!”

Depeche Mode performed 22 songs in what was a variation on its Tour of the Universe set, opening with a string of cuts from last year’s Sounds of the Universe before moving into older favorites such as “Enjoy the Silence,” “Never Let Me Down Again” and “Stripped.”

In addition to Wilder’s appearance — his first time onstage with DM since the end of the 1993-’94 Songs of Faith and Devotion tour — the night’s big surprise was the rarely performed “Photographic,” off the band’s debut, Speak & Spell. The group also was joined by a seven-piece string section for “One Caress,” “Home” and “Come Back.”

UPDATE 2/23/10: Here’s HD footage of Wilder and Gore soundchecking “Somebody.”

  3. Photographic was actually played semi-regularly on 2005/2006 Touring The Angel dates. Nice setlist for this thing though (all singles bar the Universe tracks), and one hell of a surprise there at the end.

  7. all i got to say is it makes me sad to see AL back for that brief second. like most i wish he had never left. no offense to Christian or peter but there stage presence sucks. Alan looks sad, martin looks sad. ultimately it was sad but great for the cause, of fighting teenage cancer!!!
