For this week’s installment of Vintage Video, we revisit The Dead Milkmen’s notorious 1988 “performance” of their improbable hit “Punk Rock Girl” on “Club MTV” — which was decidedly not the usual cable-television outlet for such unkempt college radio faves.

The band members famously had little interest in properly miming their performance, and after much goofing around, and some stage diving, the ramshackle run-through ends with Rodney Anonymous handcuffing host Downtown Julie Brown — an episode that made it into the oral history “I Want My MTV” (“The Dead Milkmen handcuffed me,” Brown recalled. “I got a bit pissed about that.”)
