David J, the former bassist of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets, this week released his new Kickstarter-funded solo album An Eclipse of Ships via Bandcamp — and fans who buy the record via that page get a downloadable bonus track: David J doing a “super sleazy” cover of Britney Spears’ 2003 smash single “Toxic.”
As you can see below, David J’s also made a video for the song, on which he’s backed by Adrian H and the Wounds. The clip features the singer being pursued by porn star-turned-actress Sasha Grey, playing a “succubus-like predatory super-villainess” and wearing not much else other than red body paint.

This is brilliant! I love it. It takes some kind of mad genius to take a song like that and make it sexy… and more importantly… listenable.
Not as bad as I expected. But far better than the embarrassing Bela “cover” from a few months back.
Thing is, this isn’t so much a “super sleazy” version as a classy one. I think Britney’s was actually a lot sleazier, David kind of makes it MOR lounge. Only you can tell he’s really trying to be gruff and sleazy—When he’s just not. He always seemed like the erudite, quiet, reasonable one in the band(s).
That’s a mighty terrifying super-villainess tottering along on her high heels and having to use the handrail as she makes her way down the stairs.
Alright, if you’re going to display such massive skill with run-on sentences I guess I’ll have to alter my name a bit. ;-)
That geezer has no personality.
Ick. I’ll take Travis’s cover of Hit Me Baby One More Time over this lounge music anytime.
Not bad.
I like it… won’t say I love it, but definitely like it.
Odd though… I kept having a Lydia Lunch “Queen of Siam” vibe from the music.
F*ck I’m old…
OMFG this video is so awkward, it makes makes me wanna look ashamedly to the floor, pretending this hasn’t happened. And hey, you hired the scandalous – whisper, whisper – Sasha Grey, maybe knew her before? You are sooo cool…. not! The old-guy-once-of-fame attempt is so gawky, I can hardly believe it. Is your career really so run down it needs a move like this? You think covering a Britney Spears song is some kind of innovative? Travis did it better, others will doo it better. Man, get a life, get some humour! But to say one good thing, the music is a lot better than I was afraid of and will get its plays in your usual Kommerz-Goth-Allnighter.
Hey Thomas – I could care less about this, but your comment makes you sound like quite the hipster. OMFG!!! Give me a break and go back to Britney and GoGo.
someone teach David J how to run like a grown-up
