Vintage Video: ‘20/20’ probes ‘New Wave rock’ phenomenon in 1979 segment

For this week’s installment of Vintage Video we dip back to the late 1970s for this delightful report by ABC newsmagazine “20/20” on “the current transformation of rock ‘n’ roll — it’s called New Wave rock.” The clip comes via JukeboxGraduate.com, the blog of “B-Sides and Broken Hearts” author Caryn Rose. As she notes, the 15-minute segment features great live footage of Talking Heads, Ramones and The Clash, among others.

But the real kicker comes at the end, when anchor Hugh Downs suppresses a chuckle and says, “That may seem like pretty weird stuff, but I think we should remember those 21-year-old lyrics from Danny and the Juniors: ‘I don’t care what people say. Rock ‘n’ roll is here to stay.'”
