Monday night in New York City, punk legend Patti Smith sang and read poetry at Milk Studios for the opening of “Illumination: Who Are Poets,” an exhibit by rock ‘n’ roll photographer Steven Sebring — and was joined onstage by Michael Stipe for an impromptu performance of R.E.M. smash “Everybody Hurts.” In the clip above, you can see Smith fumble through the song (“It’s not the first time I screwed up one of his songs,” she says at the end) before Stipe invites the whole gallery to sing the final “hold on” choruses.
