This fall, The The will release The Comeback Special: Live at the Royal Albert Hall, a multiformat live album and Tim Pope-directed concert film documenting Matt Johnson’s reactivation of the band for a 2018 reunion tour, its first in 16 years. The Cure will commemorate last year’s 40th anniversary celebration with a new 6-disc box set this fall that will include full audio and video of the band’s recently screened “Anniversary” concert film as well as the yet-to-be-seen visual document of the group’s Meltdown festival set. Film director Tim Pope finally let the cat out of the bag, today announcing plans to collaborate with Robert Smith on a “feature-length, chronological documentary of The Cure’s history from the 1970s via present day to the future” — a project that promises to include never-before-seen footage.
Now we’ve got our first confirmation that something is indeed in the works to mark next year’s 40th anniversary, courtesy of film director Tim Pope, the man behind some of The Cure’s most iconic music videos (“Close To Me,” “The Love Cats”) and the full-length concert film “The Cure in Orange.”
While we’ve posted this before — more than three years ago, in fact — The Cure’s Robert Smith has yet to follow through with his announcement of a DVD release of “The Cure in Orange,” so, as it remains sadly out of print, we once again present the full 1987 concert film, thanks to the miracle of YouTube.
