Whereas the first time around, we conducted a yearlong Best of the ’80s album survey, we’re going to dip our toes back into the polling waters by focusing on a single act: The Cure. One of the bigger draws for Record Store Day this year was the 7-inch from The Smiths that featured previously unreleased demos of the band’s 1985 single “The Boy with the Thorn in His Side” and its original B-side, “Rubber Ring.” For those who didn’t get one of the 45s, or don’t do vinyl, check out both songs here.

Today was Record Store Day, and as one eagle-eyed Slicing Up Eyeballs reader alerted us, the Transportation Security Administration took to Instagram to relay an important message for traveling collectors: pack that fresh vinyl in your carry-on, not your checked baggage.

As teased yesterday, Depeche Mode has announced plans for what it’s calling an “exceptionally exclusive performance” in Los Angeles next week as a thank-you to the fans whose ticket demand has led the band to add a record fourth date at the Hollywood Bowl this fall.

An artist known only by his Instagram handle alshepmcr has taken to stenciling lyrics from classic songs by legendary Manchester bands Joy Division, The Smiths and The Stone Roses onto the double-yellow lines that split the city’s streets — a creative endeavor, he says, that’s designed to make people stop and think.

J Spaceman and Sonic Boom are asking fans of Spacemen 3 not to buy any of that band’s Record Store Day releases in the U.K., saying they’re in a dispute with the owner of the record label putting out the three titles, and that “any monies from those sales will go directly to him and help fund his side of the dispute.”

Folk Devils — an ’80s blues-influenced post-punk act fronted by the late Ian Lowery of Ski Patrol — will continue a reunion that began last year with the release of the retrospective Beautiful Monsters, having now announced summer dates in their native U.K. with the Inca Babies.
