Matt Johnson last weekend released a new 7-inch by The The for the first of three Record Store Day “drops,” a single called “I Want 2 B U” that calls to mind “This Is the Day” because Johnson wrote and recorded it with the “quirky Omnichord instrument” he used on that 1983 classic. The Captured Tracks record label will launch its new compilation series Excavations this fall with a 28-song collection of largely forgotten indie gems from the era that followed post-punk called Strum & Thrum: The American Jangle Underground 1983-1987. Full details right here.

Tears For Fears will follow up deluxe box-set editions of The Hurting and Songs From the Big Chair with a five-disc reissue of the duo’s third album The Seeds of Love that features a new 5.1 Surround mix of the album and an hour’s worth of previously released material.  Full details, and an unreleased track, right here.

Rhino Records will release a 3CD/1LP expanded reissue of The Replacements’ 1987 album Pleased To Meet Me this October, and the label is offering fans’ another taste of the previously unreleased material contained within: in this case, a demo of album opener “I.O.U.”  Listen to it right here.

Beggars Arkive this October will reissue the 10th studio album from post-punk legends The Fall — 1988’s The Frenz Experiment — in deluxe expanded 2CD and 2LP editions, with the original 10-song record supplemented with a second disc of singles and B-sides from that era. Full details right here.

The new all-star remake of The Mission’s 1988 anthem “Tower of Strength” to benefit COVID-19 frontline workers is now out digitally, and you can hear it via its music video, which combines footage of many of the participating performers with clips of medical personnel. Watch it right here.

Pylon, the deeply inventive Athens, Ga., band that married post-punk, new wave, dance and funk, will be celebrated this fall with a new box vinyl box set that collects newly remastered pressings of their first two albums and adds two records of rarities and early recordings. Full details here.

The 1982 debut album by Love Tractor, part of the fertile Athens, Ga., college-rock scene that also birthed R.E.M., The B-52’s and Pylon, has been remixed and remastered by Bill Berry and Sugar’s David Barbe, and will be reissued with an unreleased bonus track this fall. Pioneering electronic music act Cabaret Voltaire — now just co-founder Richard H. Kirk — will release its first new album in 26 years this November, an eight-song collection called Shadow of Fear that was born out of Kirk’s return to live performance in 2014.
