Aussie guitar-rock heroes Hoodoo Gurus this spring will release Purity of Essence — the band’s ninth studio album and first under a new deal with Sony Music — which frontman Dave Faulkner says finds the group having “captured something special this time.”
Due out sometime in March, the album — which gets its title from “Dr. Strangelove” — is preceded by the single “Crackin’ Up,” which was released last month (see video below). Faulker, on the band’s website, claims the song came to him in a dream.
He writes:
“It’s only ever happened before once in my life where I have actually dreamed a song. I woke up and had the melody, all the chords and the title, walked out of my room and told the friends who were staying with me not to talk to me while I found my little cassette recorder and put the song down”
In a post on the band’s MySpace page, Faulker notes that “there is such a diversity of styles across the songs that the album doesn’t get repetitive,” and adds that “there are some pretty fierce rockers on there — a couple as hard-core as we’ve ever managed to do, and that’s saying something.” Faulker also reports the record is co-produced by Charles Fisher, who handled production on Mars Needs Guitars! and In Blue Cave and mixed by Ramones vet Ed Stasium, who worked on the Gurus’ Kinky and Crank albums.
The album’s full tracklist has not yet been revealed.
